PDF Icon Small CMS Develops Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has announced the development of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMI). One of the latest provisions of the health reform legislation, CMI is charged with researching and developing new methods of delivering healthcare and paying healthcare providers with the goal of improving patient quality of care and reducing healthcare costs. PDF Icon Maryland Court Upholds Physician Self-Referral Law
In a January 2011 decision, the Maryland Court of Appeals upheld that the state’s patient referral law which prohibits group practice providers from referring their patients to other members of their group for certain tests and services. While there are several exceptions for restricted referrals within a practice, the Court relied on legislative history, intent, and federal guidelines to preclude these exceptions for the referral of patients for MRI, CT, and radiation therapy services.
